Fire damages new Scranton park shelter

A fire of unknown origin caused extensive damage to the newly constructed shelter house in the Scranton School Memorial Park June 9. The emergency call was placed about 11 am with the Scranton fire department responding immediately.

The wooden structure, which was funded almost entirely by grants, sustained serious damage. The project was almost completed with just a few minor details to be finished. The structure contains restrooms and storage as well as providing shelter.

The matter is under investigation. City officials expect the loss to be covered by insurance.
